Abstract
A 76-year-old male with history of recent traumatic subdural hematoma requiring craniotomy presented to the ED several months following with worsening mental status, dyspnea, and fever. Lumbar puncture results indicated probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Patient was managed for sepsis, acute metabolic encephalopathy, and progressive cognitive decline. Due to worsening clinical courses, the patient ultimately required tracheostomy and surgical G-tube placement. This surgery was completed under regular precautions. Post-procedure, concerns continued to arise regarding the patient's CJD status and safety precautions during surgery. This presentation will discuss CJD and highlight its perioperative management.
