Abstract

We present a 31 y.o. male with no significant medical history who presented to an ambulatory surgical center for an elective open umbilical hernia repair. During the procedure, the patient developed acute asystolic cardiac arrest and was emergently transferred to a tertiary care center. Cardiology evaluation noted an initial ejection fraction of 35% and attributed his condition to catecholamine depletion related to his routine consumption of 4-5 energy drinks daily. In this case, we will discuss the causes of acute cardiac failure in young patients, including catecholamine depletion in chronic caffeine
