Abstract
We present a 27-year-old male with a 15-year smoking history who presented to the hospital for bilateral influenza A pneumonia with accompanying hemoptysis and respiratory distress that required intubation. Once intubated, the patient entered a state of cardiogenic shock related to newly diagnosed dilated cardiomyopathy. An Impella device was placed and the patient was started on venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). In this case, we will discuss Impella device placement and VA-ECMO in the setting of dilated cardiomyopathy.
