Abstract
A 77 year old female presents with drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS syndrome) following the use of allopurinol for the treatment of gout. DRESS syndrome has been implicated with the use of multiple agents, including anticonvulsants, antibiotics, NSAIDs, etc. This case will discuss the anesthetic interventions and precautions that must be taken in patients with DRESS syndrome who are undergoing surgery, including ways to promote the earlier recognition of anaphylaxis under anesthesia.
