Abstract
A 24-year-old male with a history of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy presented to the emergency department with worsening shortness of breath and cough. He was initially managed with supplemental oxygen via nasal cannula, but as his condition deteriorated, he developed lethargy and acute-on-chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure, necessitating urgent intubation for airway protection. DMD, a rare neuromuscular disorder, presents unique challenges in anesthesia and airway management. This case will explore tailored anesthetic techniques, intraoperative strategies, and postoperative monitoring practices essential for patients with neuromuscular diseases like DMD.
