Registries
Jeffrey A. Bakal and Sean C. Stuart
Publication Date: 2023
This chapter introduces registries and registry trials. Registries are collections of observational data about individuals with a common exposure or condition. They are useful tools for the assessment of the natural history of diseases and can complement the information obtained in a randomized clinical trial with information about the real-world outcomes of efficacious interventions. The registry trial is a relatively new study design that uses a registry as a source of information about trial participants. This offers the ability to rapidly recruit participants and forego the traditional and labor-intensive case report form, reducing cost and effort. Registry trials are limited by the type and quality of data in the registry. Thus, registries should be carefully assessed for quality and relevance before a registry trial is undertaken.

Public health
David Lee, Kevin Chen, and Jessica S. Kruger
Publication Date: 2023
Public health is a multidisciplinary field purposed toward improving the health and well-being of communities. From food to transportation to healthcare delivery, public health demonstrates the interconnectedness of seemingly separate social domains and how change can catalyze both intended and unintended consequences. An ongoing challenge in public health is how to effectively apply findings from various levels of research into everyday society in ways that address core problems, giving rise to the burgeoning field of translational research. Further incumbent upon those campaigning for change ensures fairness and justice in how assessments of problems are made and how plans are formulated and implemented. Although certainly not all-encompassing, this chapter imparts a toolkit for appraising outstanding concerns, developing relevant partnerships, and together synthesizing a clear vision of actions to be undertaken.
