Abstract

This is the case of a 58-year-old male presenting for a mediastinoscopy. The case concluded uneventfully, the incision was closed, and the patient was subsequently extubated appropriately. Upon leaving the operating room, patient began to develop labored breathing, significant stridor, declining oxygen saturation and a rapidly expanding hematoma beneath the incision site. Patient was supported and promptly returned to OR and reintubated while hematoma was rapidly evacuated. This case highlights the challenging nature of airway compromise secondary to surgical complications and reviews securing the airway during critical events.
