Abstract

We conducted a quality improvement project at our institution to enhance care for patients undergoing elective surgeries. We compared the length of stay for patients with and without chronic pain and found that the hospital admission rate was significantly higher in the chronic pain group (0.13%) than in the non-chronic pain group (0.06%) (P<0.0001). We attribute this disparity to suboptimal pain control in the chronic pain population and recommend implementing a preoperative assessment with the pain management team to improve outcomes.
