Abstract
A 36-year-old male with past medical history of alcohol use disorder was admitted to the ICU for management of septic shock and acute hypoxic respiratory failure in the secondary to a large polymicrobial right-sided empyema due to an aspiration event. The empyema required treatment with video assisted thoracoscopic surgery which was converted to a right thoracotomy and partial lung decortication. His treatment was further complicated by alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). In this presentation we will review pathophysiology and treatment of empyema as well as management of AWS in the ICU
