Abstract
Without comprehensive health literacy skills, the stress experienced by patients and families in the ER and ICU setting is only exacerbated by interactions with medical staff. A 50 year old male presented to the ER in ventricular fibrillation post-MI while on a run. His wife arrived afterwards, and relayed information given to her from physicians, to their niece, who was three months into medical school, hoping for explanations and medical translation. This case demonstrates the importance of having a standard practice for providing patients with health information in an understandable manner, especially in the emergent setting
