Abstract

We are presenting a 49-year-old presentation for an elective Anterior Discectomy. Procedure was uneventful, however, in the recovery room, he began to have significant swelling and difficulty breathing. Surgeon immediately opened the surgical incision to alleviate pressure at bedside. Upon attempting to intubate the patient, he was noted to have a grade IV view via videoscope, despite several attempts. Patient could not be ventilated. LMA was placed successfully. Allowing for fiberoptic intubation to be used through the LMA to secure the airway. We will discuss the importance of understanding the difficult airway algorithm and importance of LMA access outside of the operating room.
