Abstract
Pediatric empyema is a common problem that has been proven to be more efficiently treated with chest tube and fibrinolytics versus video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) decortication. Recent studies in adult patients have shown improved outcomes after adding dornase alfa to tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), however minimal published pediatric literature exists. We developed a novel, pediatric-specific protocolized combination of tPA and dornase alfa for the treatment of empyema to decrease the need for subsequent VATS procedure. Our objective is to present outcomes in pediatric patients with empyema after intrapleural administration of tissue plasminogen activator and dornase alfa
