Abstract
This workshop is an introduction to dermoscopy, which is the use of a handheld microscope with a magnification lens and light source, to examine the morphology of skin lesions. Dermoscopy has been shown to help clinicians differentiate benign from malignant lesions, avoid unnecessary skin biopsies, and improve accuracy in the diagnosis of melanoma. This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of dermsocopy along with its application to diagnosing melanoma. Participants will learn the 3-Point Checklist for diagnosis of melanoma and obtain hands on practice with a dermatoscope. This workshop can be utilized as a springboard for further study and curriculum development in dermatology for the primary care physicians and application in residency programs.
Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:
- Learn what dermoscopy is, and the evidence supporting its use.
- Learn how dermoscopy improves diagnosis of Melanoma, and the 3 point Check List for diagnosis.
- Apply the 3-Point Check List in a hands on session with a dermatoscope.
