Abstract
Background: Anki, a free and open-source spaced repetition (SR) flashcard app, has become increasingly popular, with reports of nearly 70% of medical students utilizing the application[1]. Studies have shown SR flashcards to be an effective resource for residents also[2-4]. This increase in popularity can be largely attributed to the sharing of and collaboration on comprehensive decks. Methods: The organization for the desired deck, named Dermki, was outlined on a shared Google Sheet. Using this sheet and Slack for discussions, students and residents volunteered for different sections. After obtaining permission to use images from resources like DermNet, Dermoscopedia, and Full Spectrum Dermatology, we compiled and shared the initial version via a link. The deck was later uploaded to AnkiHub, a web app that connects to Anki and enables collaboration. Access is free for Dermki users. On AnkiHub users can submit suggestions for improvements, including adding images or correcting content errors. We continue to use Google Sheets and Slack to organize efforts for improving each section, including incorporating dermatopathology, dermoscopy, and other images. Results: There were 1,086 downloads of the deck prior to moving the project to AnkiHub. As of 9/4/2023, the AnkiHub version boasts 942 subscribers. There have been over 35 contributors to the deck and over 1,600 improvements made via AnkiHub. There are currently 90 students and residents in the Slack group chat. Conclusion: Collaborative Anki flashcards have potential to be a powerful study tool for dermatologists. Contribution: This project is the result of collaboration between dermatology residents and medical students.
