Abstract

To enhance patient care, clinicians should be looking for the best ways to educate their surgical patients. The use of Real-Time Worldwide Intelligence (RIWI) provides a novel approach to collecting patient-reported perceptions. This survey investigated nonsurgical patients with hypothetical questions. To the question “What do you think is the best way to be well-prepared for a surgical procedure?” respondents were given the options of education, emotional support and preoperative meeting with clinicians. A majority responded “none” of these options were the best way to prepare for surgery. We need to tailor our approach to patient education based on what matters to them.
