Abstract

This case involves a young adult male with a history of hypoplastic left heart syndrome, post-Fontan procedure, who underwent a successful noncardiac surgery with thorough medical, surgical, and anesthetic management. This unique cardiac physiology puts patients at higher risk for perioperative adverse events and understanding of the Fontan physiology is imperative for safe delivery of an anesthetic. This case will review this physiology and its implications while undergoing general anesthesia, special considerations for these patients, and optimal perioperative management.
