Pulse Oximetry Inference From Medtronic Stealth System

Abstract
An 84-year-old female presented for laminectomy using the Stealth mapping system. Shortly after induction, the patient suddenly desaturated from an SpO2 99% to 75%. After excluding multiple etiologies of hypoxia, we determined that the drop in oxygen saturation was artifact from the interference of the Stealth system with the pulse oximeter. A blue towel was used to cover the pulse-ox probe which eliminated this interference and SpO2 resolved with normal waveform. We intend to discuss the differential diagnosis of intraoperative hypoxia as well as the mechanism of pulse oximeter monitors, interference from Stealth Systems and resolution of these interferences.
