Multidisciplinary Approach To Pain Management In Sickle Cell Pain Crisis

Abstract

A 32yo male with sickle cell anemia, opioid dependence, right heart failure secondary to CTEPH presented with hypoxia, right heart failure exacerbation and in acute pain crisis. Collaboration between Internal Medicine, Hematology, Anesthesiology pain management, and nursing teams was required to obtain adequate pain control through multimodal approach. Will discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to care for medically complex patients with acute pain and a high tolerance to opioid medications.
