Description

COVID-19 is well established as causing respiratory tract infections, however, gastrointestinal manifestations of COVID-19 infection are increasingly being recognized, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is known that SARS-CoV-2 uses the receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) to gain cellular entry into the lower respiratory tract. This receptor has also been noted to be expressed in gastrointestinal epithelial cells, leading to inflammation and resulting malabsorption.
