Abstract
Failure to appropriately time initiation of anticoagulation when patients receive an epidural or intrathecal procedure can result in serious adverse events such as hematoma. Careful ordering, verification and monitoring procedures ensure best practices are in place to keep patients safe. Clinical decision support built into electronic health records systems can help providers and pharmacists maintain compliance with hospital procedures for anticoagulation management in patients receiving neuraxial procedures. This study's purpose is to evaluate the impact that clinical decision support alerts have on hematoma rates, proper timing of initiation of anticoagulation following neuraxial procedures, and efficiencies gained through optimization of clinical decision support.
