Abstract

Concussions in sports and physical activity have become a significant concern due to an annual increase in rates. Concussions, defined as traumatic brain injuries, result from impacts to the head or body, causing temporary and persistent neurological symptoms. Repetitive concussions can give rise to long-term cognitive deficits and conditions such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. While research has focused on diagnosis and return-to-play protocols, the role of playing surfaces remains underexplored. Specifically, synthetic turf has faced scrutiny for its link to rising ankle and knee injuries, though limited research addresses its connection to concussions. It has been suggested that the increased injury rate may be related to surface hardness. Our study aims to identify trends in concussion reporting categorized by playing surface in Michigan High School Athletics.
