Abstract
Adult patients with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) frequently present to the Emergency Department (ED) and are often hospitalized. In the absence of sepsis or failure of oral antibiotics, hospitalization is primarily driven by the perceived need for parenteral antibiotic therapy, based on a gestalt assessment of comorbidities, vital signs, and subjective visual evaluation of the infected tissue, resulting in both under-triaging patients who require hospitalization and over-triaging those who could be managed with outpatient therapy. With hospital bed space becoming increasingly scarce and costly, optimizing its use is critical. This study aims to improve ED risk stratification by (1) characterizing the clinical course of ED patients with SSTIs and (2) developing a predictive model to guide appropriate treatment decisions.
