Abstract

Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is increasingly utilized in emergency and otolaryngologic settings for the diagnosis and management of peritonsillar abscess, a common complication of tonsillitis. These abscesses pose a risk of airway compromise, making rapid diagnosis and treatment critical. POCUS offers a non-invasive, real-time imaging modality that distinguishes peritonsillitis, abscess, and cellulitis, facilitating accurate diagnosis. Historically, clinical examination and CT imaging were standard for diagnosis, with blind drainage commonly used for management. Intraoral POCUS minimizes radiation exposure and guides procedures such as needle aspiration or incision and drainage. However, the role of POCUS in improving procedure success rates and reducing patient time spent in the ED remains an area of exploration.
