Abstract
Over 50% of pregnant people in the United States are overweight or obese. Obesity in pregnancy poses unique anesthetic challenges such as patient positioning, monitoring difficulties, difficult neuraxial placement and airway management, and an association with comorbidities such as sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease, all of which lead to a risk of anesthesia-related complications and maternal mortality. Pre-operative anesthetic planning including postoperative care management can be utilized to minimize the risk of complications and improve patient outcomes. There is limited literature on the anesthetic care of parturients diagnosed with super obesity (BMI >45). This case illustrates the importance of taking into consideration various clinical factors to ensure effective management of a super obese parturient.
