Abstract
Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) is a rare manifestation that can occur following a pregnancy that involves malignant proliferation of trophoblastic tissue. Most often it occurs following a molar pregnancy, but about 25% of cases are preceded by a normal pregnancy. Choriocarcinoma occurs in 1-2% of these and is extremely aggressive, causing diffuse symptoms with distant metastases. Before chemotherapy, this disease was often fatal. Now, treatment options are methotrexate for low grade tumors, and combined chemotherapy for high grade, which includes etoposide, methotrexate, actinomycin D, cyclophosphamide and vincristine, often adding lupron for ovarian suppression.
