Abstract
Adequate prenatal care is vital for the health of the pregnant person and their baby. It has been linked to declines in prenatal and postpartum cigarette smoking, reduction in inappropriate gestational weight gain, decreased premature rupture of membranes and onset of precipitous labor, and an increase in breastfeeding. It is also associated with significant reductions in low birthweight babies and neonatal mortality. It has been shown that people who are insured prior to conception are more likely to initiate care in their first trimester of pregnancy than their uninsured counterparts. While it has been well established that having insurance compared to not having insurance is an important predictor of prenatal care adequacy, the extent to which insurance type matters remains unclear.
